24 easy Christmas activities for kids at home

December fills up fast, but the moments kids remember are often the small ones at the kitchen table. Here are 24 low-cost, mostly screen-free ideas, one for each day up to Christmas Eve. Mix and match; there's no need to do them all.

Crafty and creative

  1. Make paper snowflakes and tape them to a window.
  2. Color a stack of Christmas pages and turn the best ones into gift tags.
  3. Make a paper chain countdown and tear off one link each night.
  4. Draw your family as gingerbread people.
  5. Decorate plain paper bags as gift bags.
  6. Make handmade cards for grandparents, neighbors or a care home.

Games and family time

  1. Play Christmas bingo after dinner (use candy or buttons as markers).
  2. Do a Christmas word search race.
  3. Play holiday charades: act out songs, movies or "wrapping a present".
  4. Hold a family "would you rather", Christmas edition.
  5. Build a blanket-fort reading night with holiday books.
  6. Have a cookie-decorating contest with simple judging categories.

Kind and giving

  1. Sort toys and pick some to donate.
  2. Bake or buy a small treat for a neighbor.
  3. Write thank-you notes to a teacher, mail carrier or bus driver.
  4. Collect canned food for a local food bank (check what they need first).

  1. Take a Christmas lights walk or drive.
  2. Visit the library for holiday books and story time.
  3. Go on a pinecone or evergreen hunt for a centerpiece.
  4. Look up free community tree lightings or parades near you.

Santa and Christmas Eve

  1. Write letters to Santa.
  2. Make a "nice list" of kind things each child did this year.
  3. Pack a Christmas Eve box: pajamas, a book, a treat and an activity.
  4. Leave out cookies and carrots, and read a favorite story together.
